Soil that holds water
Many Rock and Dane County yards sit on silt loam over a heavier, clay-rich subsoil. Water moves through it slowly, so grading, downspout lines and bed drainage are settled before anything is planted or poured.
Freeze and thaw
The ground here freezes deep and heaves as it thaws. Patios, walks and steps get a compacted gravel base and control joints so slabs move as planned instead of cracking at random.
Cool-season turf
